Orthodontic appliances in Sheffield are our core business; there is probably not a single type of appliance we have not made over the last forty plus years, along with many prototypes and ‘one-offs’.
We buck the trend totally when it comes to our production methods, unlike most commercial labs we still employ technicians who qualified at specialist dental colleges and take responsibility for the whole appliance, putting their name to it as a matter of pride.
Removable appliances still form a significant proportion of our output, but proportionally it is very different to back in the 1970s/80s when our main activity was URA/LRA work along with some functional appliances and many thousands of plaster models. The skills to make this type of appliance are rapidly being lost, but our technicians have a vast number of years experience and it is our aim to pass those skills on to the next generation.
Today, a large part of our activity is Twin Blocks and other functional appliances, we also provide many more devices used for fixed therapy like palatal arches, space maintainers, bands and brackets along with archwires.
Probably the biggest change is to retainers, we used to make thousands of Hawley and Begg retainers, contemporary retainers are vacuum formed or bonded twistflex wires with Hawleys being the exception.
